CHILDREN'S ACHIEVEMENTS
DUE TO PEACEWAYS-YOUNG GENERAL ASSEMBLY
* For the first time in history
children's ideas from 30 countries have been included in the initial
draft of an international document: the World Food Summit document adopted
in Rome in November of 1996.
* A child was allowed full
speaking and voting privileges at a UN/FAO International NGO Consultation
and inserted four phrases and a paragraph into the World Food Summit
document.
* Over one million children
worldwide have been involved in projects to better their communities
in the areas of human/child rights, education, health, the environment
and food security.
* There have been 92 meetings
around the world since 1994 educating children about the United Nations
and about child rights/responsibilities.
* Hundreds of children from
opposing factions and diverse cultures have successfully learned to
work together in a spirit of cooperation and understanding.
* The Australian government
included an addendum written by children at a PEACEWAYS conference in
its 1990 World Summit for Children Plan of Action approved in Parliament,
signed by the Prime Minister and sent to the United Nations Secretary
General.
* A 32 page book of practical
suggestions to live responsibly was written by children from all over
Australia. It was printed by the Education Department of Tasmania and
distributed to every school in the state and others throughout Australia.
* During meetings with UN
officials, governmental and world leaders such as the Dalai Lama, children
have proven they can offer practical insights into world issues and
that they are ready to responsibly partner with adults in creating a
brighter future.
* At the World Summit for
Sustainable Development Peaceways-Young General Assembly was asked to
coordinate and moderate the only side event in the Ministerial Session
presented by children.
* In 2004 in Abuja, Nigeria
the Fifth Annual Young General assembly participants wrote 105 project
plans so children worldwide can assist their governments in achieving
the 21 targets set forth in A World Fit for Children.
* In 2005 at the 58th
annual DPI/NGO Conference at UN headquarters, Peaceways-Young General
Assembly was asked by DPI to coordinate the midday workshop “Youth
Engagement in the Peace Process.”
* In 2005 the President of
Malawi arranged to have the Young General Assembly Statement for the
General Assembly Session on Youth read to the GA by two Malawian children
appointed by the YGA as their representatives. The chaperone, a minor
official in the Malawian government, took over the podium and read her
own statement during the children's allotted time.
