The Children's World
Seminar
September 14-21, Vermont, USA
At this international
gathering of 32 young people ages 11-19 from 21 different countries
participants wrote The Children's Declaration for Peace and designed
projects to further world peace. Six participants stayed after the Seminar
to take part in the UNICEF children's program in front of UN headquarters
the day before the 1990 World Summit of Children. They told about their
projects and read The Children's Declaration for Peace. The over 1,000
New York school children attending gave them a long and loud ovation.

keynote speaker, spoke on 2 panels about child centered education and
presented a 4 hour workshop to teachers "There's No Such Thing
as Teaching."

for international use and adult liaison member of the Youth Strategy

This conference
was developed in partnership with 17 year old Marcus Caldeira of Brasilia.
The participants created guidelines that are being used now to organize
classes for the illiterate poor in Brasilia and other parts of South

Twenty young Australians
gathered in the PEACEWAYS office to speak with children on five continents
about their concerns for the future. The Link-Up originated in Honolulu,
Hawaii.

At this national
conference children wrote a 30 page manual of suggestions for people
to use to change their living habits to further World Peace. After the
conference they obtained permission from Australian state governments
to have the manual placed in public school libraries.

in the presentation of this international meeting at Heart's Bend World
Children's Center during which the children studied the 1990 World Summit
for Children Declaration and interacted with U.N. and UNICEF officials

came together to discover and develop their abilities to draw upon their
creative and inner strengths through indigenous ceremonies, conflict
resolution, art, drama and music. This conference was organized by children
who attended Peace is Possible the year before.

As a link in an
international chain of Voice of the Children hearings initiated in Norway,
PEACEWAYS conducted a national postcard campaign through which children
all over Australia expressed their concerns about the environment. These
postcard statements were organized by a student committee into "An
Appeal from Young Australians." Six top federal ministers joined
23 young representatives from different segments of Australian society
in Parliament House to discuss the Appeal.

The Future Belongs
to Everyone

PEACEWAYS worked
with John Ebenezer to organize this conference attended by 42 children
from 10 different castes. With Ellen as the sole facilitator, the children
developed a sense of self-worth and the courage to break free from age-old
caste beliefs. Afterwards, eight children's clubs involving many other
Indian children were initiated to actively improve social, health, education
and environmental community problems.

PEACEWAYS was asked
by the Norwegian organizers to bring an Australian child to speak to
international leaders about Australian children's concerns for the environment.
Ellen organized and assisted in the many activities where the international
children represented the children of the world at the Global Forum and
UNCED.
Children's Conference
on Human Rights

Eighty-four children
from 29 different countries came to this conference given by the Coalition
for Children of the Earth with PEACEWAYS assistance. The participants
studied Human Rights issues and made a presentation to officials of
the United Nations Human Rights Centre in Geneva.
Partnership for
the Future
November 4-11, Canberra, Australia
Children from every
Australian state and territory representing native and immigrant cultures
gathered to study the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the
1990 World Summit for Children Declaration. They presented a proposal
for a Children's National Council to top ranking federal officials.
They also requested that their “Recommendations for Tomorrow” be
attached unedited to Australia's World Summit for Children Plan of Action.
Their document was accepted and included in Australia's Plan of Action
reviewed by Parliament, signed by the Prime Minister and sent to the
United Nations.

Conference on Human Rights
June 13-22, Vienna, Austria
PEACEWAYS moved
from Australia to Vermont, U.S.A. to assist with this Coalition conference
paralleling the United Nations World Conference on Human Rights in Vienna.
It was attended by 178 children from 41 countries who also represented
many different indigenous tribes. At the U.N. plenary session the children
made a presentation requesting the U.N. to focus on ending the violence
in the world and to make it possible for children themselves to have
a voice in the U.N.

Ellen helped coordinate
this Program where 44 children from 18 countries developed leadership
skills, and experienced living in a culturally diverse family.

with Ajeebs Kabba of Freetown, a parent of a PEACEWAYS conference participant.
This was the first national weeklong residential conference for children
in Sierra Leone and the first to teach community development leadership
skills.

The Summit was attended
by 110 delegates from 43 countries and which met during the UN50 Charter
celebration in San Francisco. Three documents were written moving the
world's children to a new level of involvement in international affairs:
The Proposal for the Young General Assembly, the International Keeping
the Promise Report of the Status of the World's Children and the Proposal
for Hear the Children Day of Peace.

Fourteen delegates
from the 1995 World Summit of Children Project met with the U.N. Committee
on the Rights of the Child and the High Commissioner for Human Rights
to discuss the International Keeping the Promise Report. They designed
an international structure of children's National Councils so children
can become partners in the Committee's work. The High commissioner for
Human Rights later wrote that he had completed the requests the children
made of him.

World Food Summit
Policy and Plan of Action Draft Document

PEACEWAYS
was asked by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
(FAO) World Food Summit Secretary-General to gather the ideas of children
for input into the draft document to be developed for approval by heads
of state worldwide in November 1996 in Rome. Children from PEACEWAYS
conferences in 30 countries participated. For
the first time in history children had input in the initial draft of
a major international document.

Thirty-two PrepComs
all over the globe led to an August International Summit. The Project
continued to implement '95 Summit documents that aim to strengthen the
UN through the participation of children. PrepCom goals were to set

idea and discussed how children can assist the World Food Summit goals.

President and 15 year Paul Garcia attended this meeting to finalize
the document to which the Summit Project children had already contributed.
Paul was given full speaking and voting privileges and was responsible

international delegation made presentations to students from many schools
in and outside Rome describing their plan to further the Food for All
Campaign by establishing National Councils. Two 15 year old delegates

Children 11-19 gathered

International Summit
delegates selected a boy and a girl to attend the annual meeting of
NGOs at UN headquarters in New York City. Julie Radocchia, 16 years
old, addressed the NGO Closing Plenary describing the World Summit of
Children and the progress of National Councils and Hear the Children
Day. She spoke after two Nobel Peace Prize winners and a UN Peace Prize
winner and was the only speaker to receive a long, standing ovation.

During 1998 children
have made plans to host the African Regional International Summit in
Ghana, the Asian Regional International Summit in Nepal,
the Eastern European Regional International Summit in Poland
and the Pan American Regional International Summit in Costa Rica. Because
of lack of funding, only the summit in Poland met.

Five members of
the US National Council Executive Committee and Ellen conducted a one-day
intensive meeting for D.C. area students to enable them to set up the
US National Council Governmental Advisory Office. A steering committee
was set up to organize the following D.C. meetings and a draft mission
statement for the Office was developed. The steering committee is also
planning a weekend retreat for many students to define the policies
and structure of the GA Office.

USNC Executive Committee
members met to plan the first full USNC session. Students from all regions
of the US discussed possible amendments to the USNC Constitution, organized
a newsletter for the year ahead and set the time and agenda for their

Participants from
Eastern Europe and Europe attended this Summit. It focused on developing
plans for establishing national children's organizations and preparing
for the 1999 San Francisco Young General Assembly charter writing Conference.

The children have
created a design for a UN NGO Committee Of and For Children. At this
UN gathering of international NGOs they sought support for their ideas
and distributed a petition. Also they launched a campaign to inform
children and NGOs worldwide about their idea of how children can support
the United Nations by uniting as an NGO.

Young leaders from
national organizations run mainly by children come together to begin
a charter for a democratic international organization that the children
have named the "Young General Assembly." This brings the World
Summit of Children Projects to a successful close and the operation
of the YGA begins. At the closing ceremony in San Francisco City Hall,
across the street from where the United Nations Charter was signed,
Mayor Willie Brown declared that July 24, 2049 the City of San Francisco
will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the

Millennium Young
People's Congress

Young people from
all over the world will prepare an agenda of priority issues for the
Third Millennium at this meeting organized by Peace Child International.
Young General Assembly representatives attending proposed that the YGA
be selected as the main implementing organization for the young people's
millennium agenda. The participants approved this proposal. A resolution
about this partnership to be considered at the First YGA session in
2000.

Tolerance Awards

Ellen nominated
Alex Bangura from Sierra Leone and the nomination was accepted. The
US Embassy in Guinea refused to allow Alex to come to the US to receive
his plaque and $5,000 cash award. Ellen read his speech for him at the
awards ceremony at the UN and Senator John Kerry took the large award
plaque and painting to Alex when he visited Sierra Leone on US Senate
business.

Young Ambassadors
and delegates sent by national organizations run mainly by children
convened to conduct necessary Young General Assembly business. A statement
for the United Nations Millennium Summit was prepared and most of the
time was spent in working committees designing projects. The Young General
Assembly Charter was voted into force July 24 at 5:45PM. Committees
to run the organization were established.

old Patience Hlophe of Swaziland, 16 year old Karpagam Balakrishnan
of India and 17 year old Juan De La Rosa of Mexico represented the Young
General Assembly at the Interfaith Youth Forum, the Annual UN NGO/DPI
Conference, the Conference of Presiding Officers of National Parliaments,
the Global Peoples Assembly Special Session, the State of the World
Forum and the Youth Leadership Council 2000. In addition they had appointments
with UNICEF officials and the UN Ambassador from Swaziland. They initiated
a partnership with the Aristotelian Society of Italy, furthered the
partnership with the Global Peoples Assembly and strengthened the Young
General Assembly partnership with UNICEF.

Delegates and Ambassadors
from Young GA Member Organizations came together to conduct Young General
Assembly business and create 20 project plans. At the Opening Ceremony
the participants were addressed by the Prime Minister, the Minister
for Health and Welfare and the Director of UNICEF. On the last day the
Queen Mother of Swaziland invited the participants to the Royal Residence
and spoke to them about stopping HIV/AIDS.

NGOs from all over
the world came to UN headquarters to learn about United Nations plans
for the next year so they could support UN goals. Two Young General
Assembly representatives under 18 were part of a Midday Workshop.
The delegates were to stay on and attend the Special Session on Children,
but it was canceled due to September 11 events.

of the People of the United Nations Youth Forum

Temidayo Isarel-Abdulai
from Nigeria, Alessandra Costantino from Italy and Rateb Ahmad from
Afghanistan participated in writing the young people's statement “Water,
Food and Work for All” and spoke at the Peace March involving 300,000
people from 160 countries.

Sixty two young
people ages 12-24 in 21 countries entered plans for environmental projects
and completed them. Cash prizes were awarded to three of these young
people and the project plans were distributed at the World Summit on
Sustainable Development in Johannesburg.

Ha Lan Anh from
Vietnam (age 17), Temidayo Israel-Abdulai from Nigeria (age 16) and
Sweta Sen from Poland (age 16) spoke about Child Participation at New
York schools, participated in the UNICEF Children's Forum and presented
a workshop on Designing Successful Projects Involving Child Participation
at UNGASS. Temidayo was on a high level panel, Sweta and Lan Anh
wrote for the session children's newspaper. All three were interviewed
on television.

The Third Annual
Session was supposed to have convened in Hungary, but 35 days before
the meeting was to open the newly elected Hungarian government informed
the host organization they would not keep the funding promise made by
the former government so the meeting was moved to cyberspace. The young
people wrote a statement for the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

Temidayo Israel-Abdulai
from Nigeria (age 16) and Blessing David from Nigeria (age 17) were
moderators for the side event “Children: Vital Partners in Globalisation
and the Preservation of the Earth” which included street children,
HIV/AIDS orphans and Save the Children International. The Young General
Assembly Statement to Decision-Makers at WSSD was read and Kul Gautam,
Deputy Director of UNICEF, praised the statement and was surprised when
Blessing asked him to start including children at UNICEF headquarters
in New York. The children were principle speakers at the UNICEF/WHO
Side Event as well as and participated in the NGO Forum.

Forum

Temidayo Israel-Abdulai
and Blessing David, both from Nigeria,
represented the Young General Assembly. First they served as facilitators
and committee heads at the UNICEF Children's Water Forum in Shiga and
then they were selected to represent the children at the Ministerial
Forum in Tokyo and read the Children's Statement They moderated
the Children's Press Conference and had a meeting with Mrs. Nane Annan,
the wife of the United Nations Secretary General and also a meeting
with Princess Takamado of Japan.
Fourth Annual Young
General Assembly Session

Because of visa
difficulties only 40 participants from 14 countries could attend. The
participants initiated the Young General Assembly Global Plan of Action
aimed at achieving the targets set forth in the UN document “A World
Fit for Children,” 30 projects plans were written and committees
were selected to run the Young GA during the next year. The venue was
600 kilometers away from Bucharest so no officials came to address the
meeting.

Young General Assembly representatives moderated a workshop involving
two other NGOs titled “The Next Generation Speaks Out.” The outcome
was a list of ways that NGOs can benefit from including Child Participation

Olympic Truce Letter

Following the UN
General Assembly resolution to reinstate the ancient practice of having
a period of worldwide peace during the Olympic games, the Young General
Assembly launched a letter campaign. Over 9,000 letters and petitions
were sent to officials in 22 countries asking them to observe the UN
Resolution for an Olympic Truce.

The Executive Committee
thought that it would not be possible in the time length given at the
annual session to review the Charter as required by the Charter, the
they decided it should be done by e mail. The revisions were discussed
and voted on at the annual session.

There were 79 participants
from 5 countries. They completed the Global Plan of Action and created
105 project plans so children can help their government achieve the
21 targets set down in A World Fit for Children and put them together
in a book entitled, “Let's Do It!! Let's Have A World Fit for Children!!!”
UNICEF has approved the publication of this book, but has not decided
if to publish in printed form or as a CD. However, it will be launched
in September 2005 for the UN Millennium Goals review.

Nina Mirani spoke along with United Nations officials and head of organizations.
She read a statement prepared on the internet by YGA Member Organizations
supporting the Swiss Parliament Open Letter to the UN Secretary General
requesting a high level panel be selected to investigate the benefits

Sixth Annual Young
General Session
July 29-August 7 Blantyre, Malawi
The YGA Member Organization
African Network for the Protection and Prevention of Child Abuse and
Neglect along with the Malawi Ministry of Gender, Child Welfare and
Community Services hosted this session. The children wrote 40 project
plans and two statements: A World Free from Child Abuse and a Statement
to the UN World Programme of Action for Youth 10-year review. The Closing
Ceremony was hosted by Malawian President Mutharika. The president listened
carefully to the children's requests and said he would see that the
2 Malawian youth selected by the YGA would participate in the UN 10-year
review and he would consult with his policy advisors on the request
to gather African Union support for the Swiss proposal for a UN civil
society parliament.

with members of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundationand Risso Kosei-kai
Peace Fund to present a midday workshop “Youth Engagement in the Peace
Process” on Thursday, September 7th.
United Nations World
Programme of Action for Youth 10-year review

Bertha Chauluka
and Chisomo Singano, Two Young General Assembly selected delegates from
Malawi, represented Malawi and the Young General Assembly during the
special activities for youth during this UN General Assembly review.
The President of Malawi and the Minister for Gender, Child Welfare and
Community Services as well as the Malawi Permanent Mission to the United
Nations had taken great care to arrange podium time for the 2 delegates
to read the statement written at the Sixth Annual YGA Session. However,
the children's chaperone took over the children's podium time and refused
to let the YGA statement to be distributed in writing.

President of the National Children's Parliament of the Federal Republic
of Nigeria attended. The children wrote “A Call to Action” and presented
it to the Ministerial Segment of the Second World Water Forum.

The ONLINE delegates
held discussions and wrote 3 documents:
1. “The Children's
Statement on the Right of Child Participation and Requests to the Experts
on the Committee on the Rights of the Child.” which requests United
Nations Committee to clarify and add importance to the right of Child
Participation offered in the Convention on the Rights of the Child;
2. “The Proposal
from the Children of the Young General Assembly to the Experts on the
Committee on the Rights of the Child.” which offers rationale for
specific uses for Child Participation and cites 23 places in the Periodic
Report Form filled out by State parties to the Convention on the Rights
of the Child where state parties can
report their progress in Child Participation to the UN Committee: and
3. A Statement for
the CRC 2006 General Discussion Day on the Right of the Child to be
Heard.
