BOARD
OF DIRECTORS
PROFILE
Ellen
Brogren
Ellen
prepared for a career in education by earning an undergraduate degree
at the University of Michigan, a M.M.Ed. at the University of Rochester
and a second master's degree in Psychology at Pan American University.
As an educator, Ellen taught people from the pre-school level through
the post-doctorate level in both public and private schools as well
as universities. She presented educational workshops and seminars throughout
the US, Mexico, Europe and Asia. As an educator, Ellen became aware
of the vast resource of energy and creativity that children possess.
As a well-traveled citizen of the globe she saw her world in trouble.
In 1989 Ellen left teaching to found Peaceways-Young General Assembly
to offer children worldwide opportunities to channel their talents into
developing ways to create a more peaceful and sustainable future. With
Ellen as its Secretariat Coordinator, Peaceways-Young General Assembly
has been responsible for the organizing of over one hundred international
and national conferences for children ages 8-18 in Africa, Australia,
Asia, Eastern Europe, Europe, North America and Latin America.
Arthur
Jokela
Arthur brings creativity
and wide experience to the Board. He earned undergraduate and graduate
degrees from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Earth Sciences
and was a faculty member for 17 years in the graduate program in Landscape
Architecture at California Polytechnic University at Pomona. He
has worked on many projects from the Arctic to the tropics as a scientist,
planner or institutional innovator. He has been a founder, officer or
consultant to businesses in fields such as media production and resource-conserving
technologies. As a father, Arthur developed a deep interest in new approaches
to education and ways of engaging young people in helping invent a better
world. His visionary ideas continue to stretch the thinking of educators
and students, and of their supporting institutions and communities.
Nina
Mirani
Nina brings an international
flavor to the Board. Her mother was born in Brazil and her father in
the Middle East. Nina was born in the United States but has resided
in several different countries around the world and she speaks four
languages. Nina was very active in organizing the First Annual Young
General Assembly in 2000 when she was an outstanding student at International
Polytechnic High School on the campus of California Polytechnic University
at Pomona. Nina helped to write and vote the YGA Charter into force.
She attended the University of California in Berkeley and graduated
in 2005 with a degree in Peace and Conflict Studies. While studying
at Berkeley Nina served as a Special Representative of the Young General
Assembly. Currently, she is working in management, but hopes the future
will direct her career towards child relief work, particularly in the
sector of child soldiers.
