CREATING A POWER TALK

Making the Most of a Minute

There will be times when you need the ear of a busy person. Your only opportunity to see this person may be a chance meeting while walking quickly down the hall. You need to impress this person fast !

You need a Power Talk !

Often an overworked receptionist hears a child's voice on the phone and wants to cut you off. You need to talk fast !

You need a Power Talk !

A Power Talk gives vital information in one minute or less.

To develop your own Power Talk, follow these simple suggestions:

1. Decide the purpose of your Power Talk (?fundraising?)

2. Decide what kinds of people to whom you will be speaking (?business people?)

3. Write down your given name and your surname:

4. Write down the name of the group/school/organization you are connected with (the project for

which you are raising funds).

5. Write down what it is you want from the people to be addressed (?cash donations?)

6. Write down the reason for your request (what the funds will be used for).

7. Write down why your project is important.

8. Now comes the hard part. Go back over each sentence and underline the key words.

9. Rewrite each sentence using only the key words. Never mind about grammar or punctuation right

now.

10. Combine the key words into sentences preferably not more than three sentences.

11. Read your sentences out loud and see if you can read them so they can be understood in just

under one minute.

12. Revise until the sentences do fall within the desired time limit.

13. Read your sentences to someone who is unfamiliar with what you are doing and see if that person thinks what you said is clear.

14. Revise if necessary. Memorize if you are satisfied.

15. Go out and use your Power Talk !
