HEAR THE CHILDREN DAY OF PEACE GUIDE
Written by the young people at the 1996 World Summit of Children Project International Summit
Guidelines for Organizing a HEAR THE CHILDREN DAY OF PEACE Event
STAGE ONE- ESTABLISH A WORKING COMMITTEE
1. Gather a few friends. Have a discussion to inform them about Hear the Children Day of Peace so they can
understand its value and importance for children. Ask these friends to bring one more interested person
willing to work to a second meeting.
2. At the second meeting decide what kinds of talent and people are needed to organize the HTC of Peace
Day event. Decide who to invite and decide the agenda, place and time of the first HTC Day of Peace
Planning Committee meeting.
3. At the first Planning Committee meeting, review the importance of HTC Day of Peace and decide a theme
that will help children most locally (eliminating hunger for street kids, child abuse, an environmental
issue, etc.). Brainstorm for possible activities to promote the chosen theme. Decide which activities
are practical and within the resources available. Assign each person a task to accomplish before the
next meeting... and you are off to a good beginning......
STAGE TWO-ADVERTISE
(to set up HTC Day of Peace activities, raise funds and attract an HTC Day of Peace audience)
1. Schools:
a. Speak with officials operating schools and places where children gather.
b. Post announcements/invitations on bulletin boards, lunch rooms, school newspapers, main
entrances and computer bulletin boards.
2. Social Resources:
a. Use media for press conferences and radio and TV talk show appearances.
b. Mention projects in community club gatherings, and recreational activities to inform
children and possible funders about Hear the Children Day of Peace (HTC Day of Peace).
c. Use commercial resources by inviting companies to sponsor the HTC Day of Peace project. Put posters in store windows or advertising place mats in restaurants.
d. Contact orphanages, hospitals, societies for the disadvantaged, juvenile offenders, and
rehabilitation centers to involve children from minority groups.
STAGE THREE-ORGANIZE HTC DAY OF PEACE ACTIVITIES
- Having a local sports festival or talent show would be an informal way to get children together.
Schools in the same area could invite each other to sports or games, or have children perform in community gatherings. There could be vendors or food stands for fund raising.
2. Bring the Convention on the Rights of the Child play (see appendix) to theaters, cultural halls
or school auditoriums or create a play about the chosen HTC Day of Peace theme.
3. Hold exhibitions on children’s projects and artwork concerning the HTC Day of Peace theme
selected.
- Hold a benefit concert with slightly over-priced tickets to raise funds and pay for the attendance
of children from minority groups.
5. Have a day-long conference or workshop to talk about children’s issues and/or the selected an HTC
Day of Peace theme. Invite appropriate officials who are responsible for the areas the children
discuss. Make requests for improvements specific and invite the officials to respond after they hear
the children’s requests. By the end of the “Hearing” be sure the name and contact information of
any person/s who will follow through with the children’s requests is clearly known (which children
as well as which officials). It’s best if a definite follow-up meeting is set at the “Hearing.”
We want not freedom from adults, but a partnership with adults.
