THE IMPORTANCE OF THE TWENTY-ONE TARGETS

IN “A WORLD FIT FOR CHILDREN”

THE TWENTY-ONE TARGETS OF A WORLD FIT FOR CHILDREN (WFFC)

ARE

A PLAN OF ACTION TO IMPLEMENT

THE CONVENTION ON THE RIGHTS OF THE CHILD

A World Fit for Children (WFFC) is a dynamic tool for the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). We children see WFFC as a plan of action for the implementation of the Convention, even though WFFC is not a legally binding document. However, by coupling WFFC and CRC, governmental decision-makers can give WFFC targets the priority needed for achievement.

The Convention on the Rights of the Child does not mention HIV/AIDS. Therefore, we include the three WFFC targets under the “Combating HIV/AIDS” section with the seven WFFC targets in the “Promoting Healthy Lives” goals. The resulting ten WFFC targets in both the “Promoting Healthy Lives” and the “Combating HIV/AIDS” sections implement Convention on the Rights of the Child articles 3, 6, 23, 24, 25, 27, 29, 32, 33 and 39.

The six WFFC targets under the “Providing Quality Education” section implement Convention on the Rights of the Child articles 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 20, 23, 24, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, and 39.

The five WFFC targets under “Protecting Against Abuse, Exploitation and Violence” section implement the Convention on the Rights of the Child articles 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 16, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 26, 27, 30, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40 and 41.

Any United Nations member state that has ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child can only welcome the 21 WFFC targets and set about fully achieving them if that member state is sincere about its commitment to the legally binding Convention. Any state party to the Convention on the Rights of the Child must engender the political will to achieve the 21 WFFC targets if it is to have credibility in the eyes of the world and especially its own citizens.

THE TWENTY-ONE A WORLD FIT FOR CHILDREN TARGETS

ENHANCE AND DEFINE THE MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS

A World Fit for Children (WFFC) was adopted in May 2002, twenty months after the Millennium Development Goals were approved at the United Nations in September 2000. The twenty-one targets of A World Fit for Children are smaller, more specific steps leading to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Because education can reduce poverty, and therefore reduces hunger, the six WFFC targets under the “Providing Quality Education” goal area can help to achieve MDG 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.

The six WFFC targets under the “Providing Quality Education” goal area help achieve MDG 2: Achieve universal primary education.

The six WFFC targets under the “Providing Quality Education” goal area help achieve MDG 3: Promote gender equality and empower women.

The WFFC targets under the “Promoting Healthy Lives” goal area help achieve MDG 4: Reduce child mortality.

The WFFC targets of both the “Promoting Healthy Lives” and “Combating HIV/AIDS” goal areas help achieve MDG 5: Improve maternal health.

The ten WFFC targets of both the “Promoting Healthy Lives” and “Combating HIV/AIDS” goal areas help achieve MDG 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases.

By creating a healthy environment, the WFFC targets of the “Promoting Healthy Lives” goal area help achieve MDG 7: Ensure environmental sustainability.

All twenty-one WFFC targets help to give people the tools to achieve MDG 8: Develop a global partnership for development.

A World Fit for Children is a vitally important part of the Millennium Development Goals. United Nations member states must put forth the political will to achieve the twenty-one WFFC targets, if the Millennium Development Goals are to be accomplished. If both documents are approached as two sides of the same coin, then United Nations member states can achieve the goals to which they have committed themselves.
